The Sacrament
of healing and forgiveness is celebrated individually every Saturday
from 4:00 to 4:45 p.m. in the Reconciliation room. By appointment,
Reconciliation is celebrated at any convenient time. Twice a year,
after our Soup Suppers in Advent and Lent we celebrate a Communal
Rite of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Come for a sign of forgiveness,
come for a sacrament of healing, come for a celebration of God's
abundant mercy.
Penance, or
reconciliation,
has its roots in Jesus' practices of forgiving repentant sinners
and instructing his followers to do the same (John 8:1-11; 20:22-23).
Eventually, however, the Church established a more formal practice
of confession which developed into the sacrament of penance as it
exists in the Church today. Regardless of how it is done, this sacrament
continues Jesus' ministry of forgiveness in the world. It is a sign
that the Church is a reconciling community.
